This extraordinary pair of ceramic candleholders is the result of a slow, meditative sculpting process – a search for light shaped by hand. Each piece was created over many days, beginning with a sculpted dark stoneware base and the addition of dozens of delicately sculpted porcelain crystals. Though unique in form, they were made as a pair – using the same materials and techniques to create visual harmony and balance. After the initial bisque firing, every porcelain crystal was glazed individually – a process requiring great precision to preserve definition and prevent glaze pooling. After the glaze firing, final surface treatments were then hand painted on each crystal individually, using precious 24k gold on the base of each porcelain crystal and then delicate, mother of pearl lustre on the upper portion of the crystals. The pieces were fired three times – bisque, glaze and lustre – to seal on their iridescent, radiant finish. Each holder contains a glazed, recessed cavity that fits either a tea light or taper candle (depending on the width of the base of the taper, the bottom of the candle may need to be carved down a little with a knife to fit). The interaction of light with the sculptural forms varies depending on the flame source: Tea lights send flickering shadows through the crystal field, creating shadow and movement on surrounding surfaces. Tall taper candles illuminate the crystals from above, enhancing their lustrous shine. While these are fully functional as candle holders, they are also sculptural objects – radiant forms emerging from dark clay. Inspired by natural crystal clusters and mineral formations, they embody contrast: roughness and refinement, shadow and light. Made during a time of deep uncertainty and collective pain, they symbolize a quiet kind of hope – a resilience – and a belief that even from darkness, something luminous can emerge. Seen in photos with tea lights, 17cm tall Shabbat candles and 29cm tall tapered candles. (candles not included). Note: Handle with care. Though structurally stable, the crystal forms are delicate. Wax can be removed by pouring hot (not boiling) water over the piece, followed by gentle hand washing in warm, soapy water. Do not dry upside down or exert pressure on the porcelain crystals.
